Sandor Welsh Photography

After graduating from Muhlenberg College in 1992 with a dual degree in art and psychology, I began working at various newspapers - photographing notable personalities, breaking news, professional sports, politicians and all the routines of small-town and big-city life.  I loved being a newspaper photographer.  I was doing what I'd always wanted to do - photojournalism - and assumed I'd be doing it for my entire life.

When my wife Laura and I got married, I cared so little for wedding photography, that I let my mother-in-law pick our photographer, a throwback to the old days who brought with him a marbled blue backdrop and stopped our reception every ten minutes to set up pictures.  My friends started to get married shortly after.  But by then, couples were becoming much more open minded about how their wedding photographs could look.  So I began photographing my friends' weddings and then their friends' weddings and so on and so on.  I now photograph about 40 weddings a year, love how wedding photography has become so much more exciting and more true than it ever was, and am still the photojournalist I'd always wanted to be.

My philosophy towards wedding photography is simple, guided not by a standard formula, but by each couples' unique desires and love for one another. And while I may offer suggestions, I do not impose my tastes. Color or black and white, formal portraits against a backdrop or relaxed, candid photos in a natural setting - this is your wedding, your choice.  My job is to simply stay in the background and let the day unfold.

My work has received awards from the Associated Press, Brides Magazine and the WPJA.  It has appeared in Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides, The Knot, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia Magazine, and The Philadelphia City Paper.

Meghan and Kevin – Villanova Conference Center

Meghan and Kevin got married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and then headed over to The Villanova Conference Center to celebrate.  Beautiful grounds and an old stone mansion combined to make this setting the perfect backdrop for Meghan and Kevin’s photos.  Below are a few of my favorites from the day.  Congratulations again!

Hilary and Bret – College of Physicians

Bret assures me that the fact that he’s a physician had nothing to do with his wedding being held at The College of Physicians in Philadelphia.  “That place?  Where I have the meetings?” he said to Hilary when she suggested they get married there.  Yep, that place, and it didn’t disappoint.  Housing the Mutter Museum and a beautiful outdoor herb garden, and set up perfectly by Catering by Design, The College of Physicians is definitely one of the more unique and cooler sites to get married at downtown.  Hilary and Bret were goofy and adorable (as expected) and obviously so in love.  Congratulations!!!

No Bret, don’t do it!!!
Love this shot of Hilary and her mother in the herb garden.  And below, Hilary and Bret stealing a quick kiss while they wait to begin the Ketubah signing (Jewish marriage contract).Hilary and Bret updated the Jewish tradition of the bride circling the groom and instead circled each other to begin the ceremony, symbolizing their protection of one another (above and below).

Jane and Andrew – The Downtown Club

Spring weddings in the city really are special – a perfect mix of excitement, beauty and love that’s wonderful to be a part of.  Everything took place at Old St. Joseph’s and The Downtown Club.  They’re amazing settings and no matter how many times a year I’m there, they always inspire.  What struck me most at this wedding was the way Jane and Andrew looked at each other and there are a lot of photos in this collection of those moments.  They were so adoring; connected in a way that even in the midst of a crowd, their glances seemed to call out to one another.  Enjoy!!!
